Fisher Park Tour
July 29, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Captain Basil J. Fisher turned a swamp into Greensboro’s most fashionable Gilded Era address in 1901 when he donated the lowlands for a city park that bears his name. Residents took full advantage of ample lots overlooking the park by commissioning the city’s best architects to design sometimes palatial homes.
Today. the neighborhood is recognized as one of North Carolina’s premier streetcar suburbs with architectural confections designed by Harry Barton, Hobart Upjohn, Raleigh James Hughes, Wells L. Brewer, and Frank Weston. The tour includes portions of Fisher Park, including the work of master stonemason Andrew Leopold Schlosser.
This walking tour will be led by Preservation Greensboro’s Benjamin Briggs. You will gain insights on Greensboro’s first park, redevelopment issues, and early examples of apartment housing. Tours will take a little over an hour depending on questions.
Rain or shine, cancelled only if thunder is heard. Wear comfortable shoes!
