Fisher Park Walking Tour – Tour Filled
September 16, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
$5.00Fisher Park was the first Greensboro suburb planned and developed around a park and one of the earliest park suburbs in North Carolina. British Army Captain Basil J. Fisher re-imaged a swamp and garbage dump into Greensboro’s most fashionable Gilded Era address in 1901 when he donated the lowlands for the city’s first park that still bears his name. Residents took full advantage of ample lots overlooking the new park by commissioning the city’s best architects to design sometimes palatial homes.
Today, the neighborhood is recognized as one of North Carolina’s premier streetcar suburbs with architectural confections designed by Will Armfield, J. H. Hopkins, Raleigh James Hughes, Hobart Upjohn, A. L. Schlosser, and Richard Gambier.
This is one of many walking tours across the city now in its 16th season. The walking tours will be led by Preservation Greensboro’s executive director Benjamin Briggs. You will gain insights on redevelopment issues, architectural vocabulary, and historical themes. Tours will take an hour and a half depending on questions.
Preservation Greensboro’s walking tours have always been a convenience with no booking, no payment, no red tape. You’d just turn up and off we went! Due to the pandemic we are now limiting the size of our groups to approximately 10 people and we ask for a $5 donation. The best way we can do this in a safe way is to book tickets online. To do so, please follow the button link below to our secure website. Meet in front of (Old) Temple Emanuel at 713 North Greene Street. Cancelled (and refundable) in case of rain/thunder. Wear comfortable shoes! As always, socially distance yourself, wear a mask, and wash your hands!
