Long recognized for aesthetic and cultural impact, an important study has been completed to document the economic impact of historic preservation in Greensboro. The study, entitled The Economic Impact of Historic Preservation in Greensboro, NC, was prepared by Martha Canipe during her internship at PGI as part of earning her Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Historic Preservation at UNCG. A native of North Carolina, Martha L. Canipe holds degrees in both Voice Performance and Historic Preservation from UNC Greensboro. After a fulfilling career in music, she hopes to work in Preservation Advocacy, Education and Philanthropy. “I hope this report will communicate Historic Preservation’s unique ability to protect the beauty and distinct character of Greensboro” Canipe says, “while also recruiting and creating jobs, stabilizing neighborhoods, attracting visitors and festivals, fueling the local economy and enhancing its quality of life.”
Preservation Greensboro worked with Canipe to allow the citizens of Greensboro to better understand the broad impact of historic preservation on the city. “Greensboro has experienced an unprecedented surge in preservation activity in the past 10 or 15 years” states Benjamin Briggs, Executive Director of Preservation Greensboro, “and now is the time to step back and measure the impact this surge has had on our economy.
