May is National Preservation Month, and what better way to celebrate historic preservation in our community than with Preservation Greensboro’s Ninth Annual Tour of Historic Homes & Gardens! The tour is scheduled for May 18th and 19th and will feature vintage homes in the Lindley Park neighborhood.

Lindley Park stands among Greensboro’s classic park-centered neighborhoods,” says Benjamin Briggs, Executive Director of Preservation Greensboro. “Its winding streets, sidewalks, and shade trees are the inspiration of landscape architect Earle Sumner Draper. However, few people know that Lindley Park served as an amusement park for citizens over 100 years ago…with Vaudeville acts, outdoor theatre, and a lake. Evidence of that park is long gone, but the legacy of Van Lindley, the neighborhood’s namesake, remains in the public parks and private gardens of Lindley Park.”

Vintage homes in the Lindley Park neighborhood will open their doors to ticket holders. The tour highlights charming examples of early and mid-twentieth century architecture.

The tour is the flagship fundraiser for Preservation Greensboro. Information and helpful tips are below.

Preservation Greensboro needs your help to make this years Tour of Historic Homes in Lindley Park the best ever.  We need docents to help guide tour goers through the six beautiful houses in Lindley Park.  The Lindley Park Tour will take place on Saturday, May 18 11-5pm and Sunday, May 19 1-5pm.  Please click on the link below to go to the Docent sign-up genius. The program will be available in limited numbers during the tour, but you may refer to the program quickly and easily here! The program includes a welcome, information about key figures associated with the history of the neighborhood, as well as brief histories of each of the six houses. Clickable links to tour sponsors and a handy tour map are also included. Hard copy programs will be made available at each house and Tour Headquarters at the corner of Longview and Sherwood Street (look for the Tiny House) until our supply runs out. Tickets: Advanced ticket sales ended Friday (5/17) at 5pm. Saturday (5/18) and Sunday (5/19) you may buy tickets for $35 at each house using cash or check, or by cash/check/credit card at our Tiny House tour headquarters at the corner of Longview and Sherwood streets.

Group Ticket Rate: Group ticket sales of more than 15 tickets are $25 per ticket. Please contact our office to purchase tickets at this special rate before Friday (5/17).

Tour Headquarters: The “Tiny House” at the corner of Longview and Sherwood Streets serves as the Lindley Park Tour Headquarters with general tour information, ticket sales, credit card sales, and Will Call. Visit our Tour Shop here!

How it works: The tour is a self-guided tour in which participants may explore each site on their own pace. Informed tour docent guides will be stationed throughout the homes to answer questions and to help you make your way through. Don’t be shy about asking questions!

Tour Magazines: A limited number of printed magazines can be found at our Tour Headquarters. If you already hold a ticket there is no need to stop by Headquarters. Magazines are available on a first-come, first-served basis at each Tour house. Once they are no longer available, please use the E-Mag linked and read on your phone, or smart device. Yes, we can recycle your tour magazine for others to use!

Getting Around: Upon arrival at Tour Headquarters or individual houses, you will be provided a tour magazine guide that you may use to learn more about the history of the community. A tour map will be included in the program guide for navigation. All of the houses are around 5-10 minutes apart. Limited shuttle service will be available, see our tour map for reference.

Walking and Biking: Lindley Park is an early twentieth-century neighborhood with narrow streets and ample sidewalks. It is a wonderful walking and biking neighborhood.

Water: Stay hydrated by visiting the Hydration Station for free water.

Gardens: Lindley Park was established by J. Van Lindley, an important horticuluturalist, philanthropist, and wholesale nurseryman. His legacy lives on in the landscaped parks, private residential gardens, and the Greensboro Arboretum located in Lindley Park. The arboretum is located at 401 Ashland Drive, and contains 14 plant collections on 17 acres of land. It was opened to the public in 1991, and is open to the public from 8am until 8pm.

Featuring live music and delicious food, we will celebrate the neighborhood just ahead of our tour weekend. Our Patrons PLUS ticket comes with admission to the Lindley Park Tour, featuring six splendid homes that represent a range of architecture and history. Patrons PLUS tickets are available for $75 each.

Tour Rules and Helpful Hints!
1. Wear comfortable shoes.  Do not wear spiked heels, as they may damage wood floors.
2. Please find parking that does not block driveways or cause bottlenecks. Some of the wider streets include Masonic Drive, Longview Street, and the grassy-sides of Lindell Road and Willowbrook Drive.
3. Event is rain or shine.  Dress accordingly.
4. Leave pets at home; no food or drink allowed in homes.
5. Children must have a ticket and be accompanied by an adult at all times; no strollers or backpacks allowed in homes.
6. No interior photography allowed in any format, sketch and notebooks are allowed.
7. Respect the homeowner’s privacy and do not open closed doors or touch personal items.
8. Tour lines may be long. Please bring sunscreen! We appreciate your patience.
9. Tour magazines will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. If we run out, please check out our online e-version that may be downloaded as a PDF from this page.
